The History of the National Friendship Day:

National Friendship Day dates back to 1930, when Joyce Hall, the founder of Hallmarks Cards, came up with the day as a marketing strategy for her business. Hall designated 2nd August as a day when people would come together to celebrate their camaraderie and send cards to each other as a sign of appreciation. However, the holiday quickly collapsed in the United States as many people realized it was just a gimmick to sell cards. Nevertheless, many countries still celebrate friendship day on 2nd August.

There was a proposal by the World Friendship Crusade to set 30th July as International Friendship Day to create a peaceful culture by promoting friendship. Dr. Ramon Artemio Bracho embraced and accepted the idea of internationally celebrating Friendship Day. The day encouraged fellowship among humankind regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, or gender.

The holiday gained more acceptance and popularity in 1999 when the United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s wife, Nane Annan, named Winnie the Pooh (Cartoon character) the world’s Ambassador of Friendship. 1n 1998, during the 65th session, the UN’s General Assembly declared 30th July the official International Friendship Day. However, many countries, including the US, celebrate National Friendship Day every first Sunday in August.
